wicked_wish: Disjointed thoughts on the socio-economics of disaster
My thoughts almost exactly. I told my husband that we would have been stuck in NO if we lived there. I can see getting necessities but electronics and appliances? Absolute chaos. I didn't watch much of Bush's speech Thursday as we were running errands-paycheck in bank to cover insurance with a stop at McKay's to trade in some old books we didn't want anymore and to get my husband a book he's been waiting for for about a year.
I'm reminded a bit of the aftermath of Lucifer's Hammer, a SF novel by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, about a comet striking Earth and the absolute chaos that resulted-landowners guarding property lines, expeditions to get supplies from flooded stores, faction led fighting to gain control of whatever was left. I'm going to re-read it in the morning. (Insomnia resulting from too much nap and caffeine plus I can't breathe through my nose well when I lay down so I'm staying vertical.)
I was saying to my husband that there is going to be some heads rolling (metamorphically) and something has got to change or else there is going to be a Civil War II.
Not to be so pessimistic about it, but I think Bush took advantage of 9/11 and rode the aftermath for what it was worth so he could change America to suit him and his buddies.

Mind the Rant (Language Warning)
It says something that all the news channel jumped on the Michael Jackson verdict rather than ask Mr. Bush why he LIED to the American public, British allies and Congress.
I read earlier last week about scandal fatigue relating to President Clinton, yet it applies more to Mr. Bush. I mean there has been more bad press in the blogosphere and the MSM about him and what he did, versus what President Clinton couldn't keep his dick in his pants, while Mr. Bush has increased the deficit, the economy is resting on a real estate bubble and we are overseas in an ILLEGAL WAR in Iraq, not to mention not having Bin Laden in custody after 4 YEARS and watching our soldiers die over there for lack of simple equipment and tactics issues. Every day I hear more shit from Mr. Bush, and its enough to make me sick. Hell, I've been sick since 2000 when Mr. Bush stole the election thanks to his brother and Ms. Harrison, now a Congresscritter.
Of course Mr. Bush's cronies and supporters are reaping the benefits while a lot of Americans are struggling day to day to put food on the table, roofs over their heads and some education in their children's heads. Healthcare is a laughingstock, where if you have the money, you get high quality care, and if not, tough titty. You wouldn't even be able to declare bankruptcy if the breadwinner in the family gets sick and has huge medical bills, thanks to the credit card companies sleeping with Congress. People with tech skills are going begging for jobs while companies looking to save a few bucks send jobs overseas. I think jobs should go overseas only if there is no qualified people at home to fill the positions. Education in public schools in the MAJORITY of places are merely places to park kids, and teach them to believe whatever an authority figure says is true.
Bullshit. The shit is getting deep in Washington and we as a country need to quit bending over for Mr. Bush and his cronies and take back control.
