Test and Note

Testing out the blog via email

I've been rather busy the last couple of weeks. Started back to reading fanfic again plus playing Start Ocean Till The End of Time (I have a serious crush on Albel Nox) and planning out a story/book plus having some ideas for some fanfic of my own. I also got the Fruits Basket series boxset and watched it twice already. I really love Fruits Basket and perhaps they make another season taking into consideration the latest information from the manga.
The voices kill me though, especially Ayame's English voice-so fruity yet posh at the same time, and Kyo's English voice made me roll on the floor the first time I heard him speak.
I think the Abbey will most likely undergo a bit of a change of focus to anime, fanfic, writing, sci-fi, fantasy and gaming with a bit of GTD and organization and a bit of politics for flavor, rather than trying to be a politics blog with just a bit of what I like. I don't have the time to constantly be on the lookout for the shenanigans of those in power and I'm tired of always being upset and outraged. It is bad for my health, so I may just do a bit of commenting on various things that draw my interest instead of concentrating on the topic.

Untitled Miscellany

I had a week's vacation from the Internet and I was pleasantly surprised that yes one CAN live with out the net. I read Charlie Stross's Accelerando and I should finish it tonight. Gave me lots to think about and I'll write some more when I finish it.
I was sick last Tuesday and it was a lovely stomach flu. I had the work-vomiting, diarrhea and fever and achy muscles. When I started feeling better, I was shocked at all the bloody STUFF that seemingly has accumulated, so I'm planning on doing a massive decluttering soon.
I came back to 1600 emails in my GMail account and am in the middle of clearing the inbox. I don't want to think about my bloglines inbox (checks….58586 new feed items…..passes out. I have got too many feeds)

Books

I’ve been re-reading my library of books since around the end of August. I’ve read The Belgariad, The Elenium, the Tamuli, The Elder Gods and The Treasured One by David and Leigh Eddings, along with The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan, Once Upon a Winter’s Night by Dennis McKiernan, and Her Majesty’s Wizard and The Oathbound Wizard by Christopher Stasheff.

I love the majority of David and Leigh Eddings work with the exception of Mr. Eddings’s first two novels, which I didn’t really get into. I have loved my copies to death and have reread them at least twice for the new ones and five times for the ones I’ve had for a while. If I need something to read, I’ll usually reach for Pawn of Prophecy or Diamond Throne or Redemption of Athalus as my backup book. I’ll even throw one of them in my bag if I’m going to be sitting somewhere for a while and I’m not sure of the reading material availability.

I did get annoyed by Khalad in the Tamuli. Khalad is Kurik's from The Elenium and serves as Sparhawk's squire. He had some firmly held class prejudices and expressed them quite often.

The Elder Gods and The Treasured One are books 1 and 2 respectively in the Dreamers series, a new quadrology from David and Leigh Eddings. They are pretty good and I enjoy them, but I haven't finished the series yet, so I'm waiting to see where they are going to take the story. The basic plot is that the world was created by 4 Elder Gods, and 4 Younger Gods, and they take turns sleeping or waking and watching the world. In the middle of the continent the Gods watch over, there is an insect like creature called the Vlagh which wants to take over the continent and eventually the world to feed its young. So Dahlaine, whose Domain is in the North, brings his brother and sisters a baby each to raise and who become the Dreamers, children who can make things happen by dreaming. But that isn't enough, as the people the Gods watch over aren't really equipped for war, so each Elder God gets gold from wherever Gods keep gold and went and recruited people from the outside world or outlanders. Zelana, of the West finds some Maags, ocean-going men who are very good at naval warfare. Her brother Veltane of the South goes the Trogite Empire and recruits several armies who are good at land warfare. Aracia of the East recruits some warrior-women from the Isle of Akalla and Dahlaine finds some horse-warriors from the Land of Malavi who will appear in more detail in book 3, The Crystal Gorge.

Once Upon a Winter's Night is a retelling of the fairytale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon". Camille is a beautiful 16 year old crofter's daughter living on the edge of the Land of Faery, who enchants Prince Alain of the Summerwood with her beautiful singing voice. A Bear comes and takes her to the Prince where she resides for awhile until a tragedy occurs and she must quest through Faery to find and rescue Prince Alain. She meets a Giant, a firedrake, Elves and the Fates who help her along her way.

The Magicians' Guild is the beginning volume in the Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. Magicians are members of a Guild and serve the King of Kyralia in various functions-healing, etc. They are also known for the Purge, where ordered by the King, wizards go through the city and drive out all beggars, vagrants and criminals out of the city and into the slums. Sonea, a young girl being raised by her uncle and aunt visits some of her friends from when she lived the slums and is involved in the Purge. She shows natural magic powers and is in turn hunted by the Guild as she inadvertently injured a Guild member. She is eventually found as her magic powers are uncontrolled and could be dangerous to the city. A kindly magician helps her learn Control and along the way she learns several things about the Guild and its members. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Her Majesty's Wizard and The Oathbound Wizard start the adventures of Matthew Mantrell, a graduate student who stumbles upon a piece of parchment with odd symbols written on it which whisks him to land where magic works but not science, and the magicians use poetry for their spells. Words are taken very seriously in this alternate earth and hold great power. I'm looking forward to finishing the series which should be fun to find.

I agree with Jason. Parents should be the ones who decide what their children see, not depending on the government to decide for them. If your child wants to play GTA and in your opinion he (or she) is mature enough to understand that GTA is just a game, then by all means, let them play with it, otherwise teach your children that there are some things you don't want them to see and let their friends parents know in the nicest of terms that your child isn't allowed to play certain videogames or watch certain movies without your permission.

And the fuss about the minigame that was unlocked? I heard about it when the PS2 version was still in development and as was stated previously, it required a mod on the PC version to unlock it. So what is the fuss about it? I remember as well when people made nude skins for the DOA games and there are even mods and hacks for The Sims to get past the pixelated shower and othe parts. Are the parents going to after EA to bump the rating up? Please.

I'm saying this as a parent myself, that the government shouldn't be expected to raise your children for you in teaching them decency, morals and personal responsibility.

Edit-Aug 2, 2005
I should put a disclosure. My husband has all 3 PS2 GTA games and plays them all and will most likely buy GTA: Liberty City Stories for our PSP when it comes out this fall. There is nothing in the games that aren't already in the media that is equally easy to access, unlike the mod in question which requires you to dl the mod and apply it, whilst worse is easy to find.

I think ratings shouldn't be the easy way out of parenting your children and deciding what to watch, listen to or play depending on family beliefs and maturity levels.

Star Ocean: The Second Story

I've been playing off and on a rather old game (1999) for the PS1 called Star Ocean; The Second Story. Its a cute little game where you decide which of two people you will be playing, and the person you don't choose will join your party later on in the story. It is an RPG from Enix which merged with Squaresoft last year. I like it, but I don't really like the fact that save points in dungeons and towns are few and far between. The gameplay is interesting. You level up with exp gained from killing monsters and you get skill points at each level up. You get to decide where to spend your points to help your characters learn new specialities and gain in stats. Things like magic spells and finishing moves are learned automatically so you don't have to decide between a stat boost or a powerful magic spell, which is rather neat. The storyline is very good and has some lovely twists. There is a bit of a rarity though, it has voice acting. The voice acting, due to media contraints(PS1 titles are on CD-ROM) is things like magic spells, attack moves and level up cheers only, but it is very cool.

FanGirl

I guess one could call me a fangirl. I squeal over my favorites. Collect things I like almost obsessively. Anyways I got this new manga in the mail, well UPS, called Othello, that I won in a drawing. It is about this girl named Yaya who has an alter ego who is her opposite personality wise. I gather I won the drawing from Del Rey Manga. Very nice, made my day :) Always nice to win things. I had a bit of extra time on the 'Net over the weekend (hubby was playing GTA:San Andreas (his birthday present from me), so the 'puter was free. I think I actually got bored yesterday afternoon. I've been catching up on great fics from HP, Gundam Wing, IY and trying some Fruits Basket and a few others. I think I've outgrown fanfiction.net for my fanfic reading, since it seems to be overrun by teenyboppers with a serious lack of grammar and spelling skills. Oi. I have a large list of stuff I like and I'm always to willing to try something new. So anyway I have a little list of my favoite fan sites.

My Favorite Fansites
Fictionalley I ship SS Leather and Libraries (Draco/Hermione); HMS Wolfstar(Remus/Sirius); & SS Thorn and Buck (Lily/James) in SCUSA on FictionAlley. (Link Leads to the SCUSA Forum)

Guilty Pleasures A great site for some high quality fics in a variety of fandoms.

Kumo no Su A Miroku/Sango fanworks site. Great art and a very nice webmistress.

NaNoWriMo Update
My NaNoWriMo Book is still going well, I'm just not going to submit it for the word count later this weekend. I got really behind when I had issues with my writing time.

When Technology Bites you Back

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro over the weekend when a bad driver which worked fine up till Friday decided to nuke my system. The only way to boot was to do it in Safe Mode which bites. It was my onboard Ethernet a SiS 900 on a ECS M810S board or what they call a KVSEM. The driver was trying to go past its allocated memory space. What had started it was a power outage, one second, and that's when it died. I've had the driver corrupted twice already and thought that was the issue. Spent most of Friday and Saturday trying to fix it. We eventually bought a replacement NIC which works great so I have my cable internet back. Cheap system builder. Anyways I've been wading through Casssandra Claire's trilogy Draco Dormiens, Draco Sinister and Draco Veritas. Beautiful stuff. Draco Veritas in Word set in Garamond 12 is 800 pages long and 300k words. I would hate to print that mess out. :) And she's not finished! I was very relieved that I had put almost all my settings and documents on a separate partition which meant I didn't lose my stuff. I do have to reinstall everything and get my settings back which sucks but much better than losing stuff from my last back up till now. :)

The Birth of A Fangirl

Thanks to Kristi's wonderful fanart and Katsudon's fanfic, I now have a thing for Duo Maxwell of Gundam Wing. I stumbled onto GW fanfic by following a cool picture of Duo and finding the story it was linked to. Great read, but some warning they contain yaoi themes(male/male pairing) so its NOT for those under 18 or those squeamish about alternate lifestyles :)
