New Year, New Post
Also, I have noticed that this post marks my 200th post since I began the blog so many years ago. A small sum compared to the years, but I plead being seduced by Livejournal and its clones.
I have been writing again, and have been posting the resultant fic to my creative journal and at FF.net and Archive of Our Own.
Fic
Night {Archive of Our Own, FF.net}
Sand [28 Ratchets] {Archive of Our Own, FF.net}
Conversation [28 Ratchet] {Archive of Our Own, FF.net}
In addition, I am going to try to get off my lazy, distracted aft and post more recs and other things. I have ideas for eassays, I am trying to iron out, and have been catching up on my rather large list of fics to read.

David Eddings Passes
And there shall be no more. David Eddings passed last night and he will be missed. I was a fan of all of his books, and he was one of the writers that inspired me to actually think about writing as a career.

Oh Dear: Not a Good Idea, or, a Short List of Fandom Gone Bad.
Last week was interesting for fandom, or at least a couple of them.
In Twilight, a writer decided to try to sell her fanfic aka “tribute novel”. That never ends well. [Supplementary Link Collection] {source: JF}
And in Supernatural, there was a wonderful display of entitlement: Somebody called security to have Jensen Ackles’ GIRLFRIEND from the con. Dear lord. the mind is boggled. Also, why would anybody want to give the fic they wrote about a character/person to THAT PERSON?

REC: Transformers [G1]: Down For Maintenance by K.A. Rose
Fandom: Transformers [G1]
Pairing: Ratchet/Wheeljack
Title: Down For Maintenance
Author: K.A. Rose
Warnings (if applicable): Slash of the mechanical sort, plug ‘n’ play
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: Transformers Fic
Why Must This Story Be Read?:
Ratchet fixes everyone, Wheeljack fixes Ratchet. I giggled at the computer terms meaning something other than what they were meant to say. A definite read.
“I added you to my first-tier permissions a long time ago,” he reminded him softly.
So cute.

Some Thoughts on Feminism and Fandom (may be NSFW)
I’ve been thinking really hard on pornography and feminism and how it interacts with my fandom life.
It’s fairly common in the various fandoms I pop in and out of to say porn for the smut fics (mostly slash but with a surprising amount of het and femmeslash, but that may be because of what I fixate on in fandom) to be called porn, but I think the definition is different, since a lot of the fics are really positive about sex and the fun of getting naked with the person you care about, while porn as it is understood in the real world is more about using women to fulfill some man’s fantasy. Of course I won’t touch the rampant girl hate in some of the fandoms (female characters are reviled since they ‘supposedly’ get in the way of the hawt boy on boy sexings, which is stupid. Or else they are all bitches and sluts and nobody likes them, which could say some things about the environments some of the girl writers are growing up in.)
Of course I could turn it around and say that women, which make up a majority of the fanfic writers are just turning that little paradigm on its ear and using men to fulfill their fantasies.
I’ve recently had the idea that porn equals legalized prostitution since they are being paid to have sex, regardless of the fact that they are being videotaped. And frankly that squicks me the fuck out.

LiveJournal, Freedom of Speech and Sex
I’ve been watching the commentary and reactions on LiveJournal since in their infinite wisdom bowed to an outside group and deleted groups and journals with incest and related terms in the interests.
I’ve always believed that pedophilia, child porn and other sexual acts with children are not good, but this arbitrary action got fandom journals and groups, rather than the actual perpetrators of sex crimes against children. The majority of those fans write/draw/talk about FICTIONAL characters and they are being punished because one group is afraid that children would be harmed by being exposed to that?
Also, so as to not be forgotten. LJ deleted the comms/journals with no warning whatsoever, not allowing the owners the opportunity to backup, or remove offensive material. That was in the ToS as well, that anybody who was to be banned/suspended for violating the ToS would have the chance to retrieve their content before deletion.
Some links others have gathered for info along with a Boing Boing article and a couple of link collection posts.
I’ll update this post as I collect more links. I’ll do a post later, sharing links I have on Fanlib.com as wells, since this may be mere coincidence that two major threats to fandom on LiveJournal occurred so close to each other.
ETA: I’ve been using Technorati and Google’s Blogsearch to gather links and also to add that LJ’s servers are getting hammered.
The LJ News posting I have linked below was at 76 pages of comments and had been up for 19 hours at the time I looked at it, which was about 2 hours ago.
