Some Thoughts on Feminism and Fandom (may be NSFW)

I’ve been thinking really hard on pornography and feminism and how it interacts with my fandom life.

It’s fairly common in the various fandoms I pop in and out of to say porn for the smut fics (mostly slash but with a surprising amount of het and femmeslash, but that may be because of what I fixate on in fandom) to be called porn, but I think the definition is different, since a lot of the fics are really positive about sex and the fun of getting naked with the person you care about, while porn as it is understood in the real world is more about using women to fulfill some man’s fantasy.  Of course I won’t touch the rampant girl hate in some of the fandoms (female characters are reviled since they ‘supposedly’ get in the way of the hawt boy on boy sexings, which is stupid.  Or else they are all bitches and sluts and nobody likes them, which could say some things about the environments some of the girl writers are growing up in.)

Of course I could turn it around and say that women, which make up a majority of the fanfic writers are just turning that little paradigm on its ear and using men to fulfill their fantasies.

I’ve recently had the idea that porn equals legalized prostitution since they are being paid to have sex, regardless of  the fact that they are being videotaped.  And frankly that squicks me the fuck out.

Six Years Later

Six Years Later, Bin Laden is still out there.

Six Years Later, $450 Billion wasted in Iraq, when our children make do with out dated schools, we drive on unsound bridges and more and more people lose their homes every day. More money was used to find one person, than was used to help an entire geographical area devastated by Katrina.

What has six years brought to us as a nation? Debt, a wasteful war, failing infrastructure, and the mastermind still holed up in a cave somewhere.

Brilliant move, Washington.
