Excellent Reading

The Rude Pundit

I like the inference that the Republicans in power are a bunch of spoiled babies, throwing tantrums, and Harry Reid is the Disciplinarian.

Update to Why I Switched From Thunderbird to Outlook

After 30 days, I decided to update y’all. I gave Outlook 2003 a good try and will keep it installed, but the hassle of moving my email archives, plus adding in things to hook into other services I use was way too much of a hassle. So I went back to Thunderbird and added Essential PIM. I won’t use it for contacts.

I went back to Essential PIM Pro (got a code during their Halloween giveaway in 2005) and rediscovered that they had hierarchal notes and to-dos, which are dead useful for GTD and its projects and contexts plus having more categories makes things easier for me. I do have a bit more fiddling to get my tasks (schedule) fixed to my needs, but its usable.

Now that Thunderbird is updated to 2.0, I’ve fallen in love with it all over again. You are not limited to five labels anymore and there is a neat feature to show all folders, unread folders or favorite folders. After a bit of fiddling I found the new buttons to navigate to unread messages, and am anxiously awaiting updated themes and extensions.

Guns

I’ve noticed that the idea that if somebody besides the VTech gunman had a gun, there wouldn’t have been 32 people dead.  Even in a productivity blog (Matt’s Idea Blog, and look at the last comment @ 6:16 AM.)

More guns aren’t the solution.  I don’t know the solution, but I know that more guns isn’t it.

I agree with Matt: Being aggressive militarily is hurting our children, by taking money away from schools and other needed programs.

Also?  Culture of life shouldn’t be confined to outlawing abortions.

Earth Day Musings

I was around 10 or so when the first wave of eco-awareness hit the media.  Magazines from National Geographic to Seventeen carried articles on how one can do better for the environment.

Now, it’s become a new fad, while it would have been better to do it as a daily thing, instead of faddish cycles.

I think on this day, Earth Day (or Arbor Day), being environmentally aware should be a ongoing habit.

I do like that there are a lot more choices for healthy and green products now and much more widely available in stores, but we need to do more than that.

Wife convicted in preacher’s death- Yahoo! News

Wife convicted in preacher’s death – Yahoo! News

I’m happy it was voluntary manslaughter versus 1st degree murder, but still, it is a horrible mess.

Some Links from my wanderings

America, If We’re Not Careful, Democracy Might Break Out and

Live Vodka-Shot Blogging the President’s War Funding Hissy Fit: are both really good, if old posts (I think the LJ syndication went wonky and popped up some older material) I found on my LJ flist today.

From my Netvibes page:

Making Light has several really good articles: Dealing With Guns (I linked this yesterday)  plus I Don’t Feel Two Years Healthier, and the Moderation Certificate. (here, and an gender-neutral version)

Original Signal: Transmitting Politics, is a great place to see what some major blogs on both sides are saying about issues of the day.  The rest of the Original Signal offerings are a time saver as well!  I can scan headlines and click on interesting things all in one place.

Bitch Ph.D.: Supreme Court Declares Women Less Intelligent than Legislators

Bitch Ph.D.

If one was conspiracy-minded, one would think that the decision was meant to be covered up by the shooting at Virginia Tech on Monday.

But whatever one’s views on abortion, legislating against a medical procedure commonly used to save lives (the mother) or to safely deliver a already dead or nonviable fetus (not a baby), is shoving one’s beliefs down the throat of America.

Abortion is legal, though in the interest of controlling women’s reproduction, many narrow-minded folks are eroding away at the freedom to choose. If they are so dang worried about unwanted pregnancies, how about going after the men who got the women pregnant in the first place? How about making it easier to obtain Plan B and birth control pills, instead of making women feel like sluts just because they aren’t prepared to have a baby, or was raped?

Also read the links Bitch gathered for information about the so-called “partial birth abortion”.

ETA: check out this link to Slate: Father Knows Best and also this post by The Rude Pundit (where I got the slate link): The Carhart Decision: Keeping Women Moral.
